About Me
Hello, it’s Dr. Andy Choi
I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, an American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited doctoral program at a top public university. I am board-certified in Counseling Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology and credentialed by the National Register of Health Service Psychologists, having met the highest professional standards in my field. I am licensed to practice in California (PSY33136), Washington, DC (PSY200001465), and Hawaiʻi (PSY-1916).
My clinical training is broad and varied, spanning community health clinics, inpatient and outpatient hospitals, and university counseling centers. I have worked at several minority-serving institutions with clients of wide-ranging demographics and circumstances. My eclectic background and natural inclination to blend diverse therapeutic perspectives enhance my capacity to understand clients' experiences with depth and creativity.
I fulfilled my APA-accredited Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology at the Counseling and Student Development Center of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Working with a diverse island community of young adults, I refined my expertise in delivering culturally responsive and goal-oriented interventions that target psychological barriers to personal wellness and academic and vocational functioning.
Subsequently, I completed my Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Psychology at Cambridge Health Alliance / Harvard Medical School. I specialized in providing intensive psychodynamic treatment to politically and socioeconomically vulnerable populations in the public sector. Collaborating with integrated healthcare teams, I helped clients address issues from everyday problems to major traumas and psychiatric illnesses.
Alongside my independent practice, I hold a faculty appointment at Pace University, where I train graduate students in professional psychology and conduct interdisciplinary research on intersectional racism-related stress and its strength-based mitigation. I publish and present my work nationally and internationally.
I enjoy outdoor activities, socializing, and visual and performing arts. I also read and travel regularly, valuing lifelong learning and new cultural experiences. I use he/him/his pronouns.
